Preparing for Pregnancy

As black women, we encounter health disparities that impact pregnancy. These disparities are due to various factors including systemic racism, socioeconomic inequalities and implicit bias in healthcare. Being aware of these issues is the first step in advocating for yourself.

Reaching the decision to have a baby or to grow your family takes much deliberation. For black women, this decision presents it’s own challenges and considerations. Not only do we face the same complications that arise with pregnancy as our white counterparts, our journey is uniquely influenced by cultural, social and healthcare factors. We are more at risk of complex health issues, economic inequalities, even death. While it is important to be aware of this, It is also important to realise that your experience is yours only and it should not be generalised. YOU CAN and WE ARE WORTHY of a positive pregnancy and birth.

Taking steps to prepare for pregnancy empowers you to be proactive and to make informed decisions regarding your health. Not only does this optimise your chances for conception, but it puts you in better physical and mental health to have a baby. Here are a few things you should consider when preparing for pregnancy:

Understand health disparities: As black women, we encounter health disparities that impact pregnancy. These disparities are due to various factors including systemic racism, socioeconomic inequalities and implicit bias in healthcare. Being aware of these issues is the first step in advocating for yourself. Try and seek a healthcare provider who is culturally competent and sensitive to the specific health concerns of black women.

Get a health check: Schedule an appointment with your general practitioner (GP) to discuss your medical history, any chronic conditions, medications and vaccinations. Your doctor can provide personalised advice based on your health which may support your family planning.

Understand your menstrual cycle: Track your menstrual cycle to understand your fertility window. Knowing when you ovulate can help you time intercourse for the best chance of conception. There are lots of apps that can help with this and ovulation kits.

Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins is vital. Pay particular attention to nutrients like folic acid, iron and calcium. Consider taking a prenatal vitamin prior to conception to ensure your body has the necessary nutrients.

Educate yourself: Knowledge is your power. Educate yourself about pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care. Consider local classes, reading books and attending workshops. The more informed you are the better equipped you will be.

Look after your mental health: Pregnancy can be a time of emotional ups and downs. If you have a history of depression, anxiety or if you’re experiencing stress, seek support from a mental health professional.

Financial Planning: Let’s not beat around the bush, kids are expensive! From basic care needs to nursery fees it all tots up! Financial stability can reduce stress and provide a secure environment for your growing family. Saving a little each month and budgeting could take some of the pressure off.

Ask for help: The strong black woman narrative is tired. We’re often strong because we have to be not because we choose to be. When it comes to raising children, it really does take a village. Ask for help. Lean on family and friends who can provide emotional support and practical assistance during pregnancy and following childbirth.

For black women, preparing for pregnancy involves addressing unparallel health challenges, advocating for our care and building a supportive community. By taking proactive steps and seeking support, you can enhance your chances of a healthy pregnancy and a positive start to your motherhood journey. There are resources and communities ready to support you every step of the way. Remember every journey is different, so be patient and kind to yourself as you prepare for this incredible chapter.
